Employment Benefits

Queen's has a long tradition of caring for our employees. We recognize that a comprehensive benefits program is a vital component of every compensation package. At the same time, we also realize that each individual has his or her own individual set of needs and priorities. To that end, Queen's has developed a flexible and innovative program of benefits to help our employees select the benefits that work best for them and their families.

Eligibility
Employees are eligible for benefits if they are a regular full-time or regular part-time (who works 20 hours or more a week). Health-care coverage begins on the first day of the month following the date of hire. Eligible dependents may also be covered under our medical, dental and dependent life benefits.

Queen's provides employees a way to reduce your taxes. The employee's portion of his or her monthly health-care premiums can be paid with pre-tax payroll deductions. This decreases the employee's taxable income and therefore decreases taxes paid. Additional ways to save on taxes can be explored through the Flexible Spending Accounts.

Medical Insurance
Employees are eligible for benefits if they are a regular full-time or regular part-time (who works 20 hours or more a week) employee. Health-care coverage begins on the first day of the month following the date of hire. Eligible dependents may also be covered under our medical, dental and dependent life benefits.

Dental Insurance
Queen's provides a comprehensive dental plan through Hawaii Dental Service (Delta Dental Provider). The plan covers 100% of the charges for preventative care and a significant portion of the expenses for other dental work. Orthodontia coverage is an additional benefit for non-bargaining employees only. The plan provides a maximum lifetime benefit of $1,000 for orthodontic services.

Flexible Spending Accounts
Queen's recognizes that dependent-care and health-care expenses can significantly contribute to the costs associated with working. Paying these costs with pre-tax dollars can reduce the employee's actual out-of-pocket costs. Health-Care and Dependent-Care Reimbursement Accounts take advantage of federal legislation that allows employees to pay their portion of qualified expenses with tax-free earnings.

Basic Life Insurance
Queen's provides life-insurance plan that provides basic term life coverage equal to two times the employee's annual salary for non-bargaining, full-time employees. Additional coverage can be purchased through the Supplemental and Dependent Life Plans. Coverage for collectively bargained employees are determined by their respective collective bargaining agreement.

Long-Term Disability Insurance
Long-term disability plans help replace lost income if an injury or illness prevents an employee from working 180 days or longer. Queen's provides a basic benefit equal to 50 percent of one's income, up to a maximum of $10,000 per month. The supplemental plan allows the employee to purchase additional coverage. Coverage for collectively bargained employees are determined by their respective collective bargaining agreement.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance provides coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you die or are injured as a result of an accident. AD&D benefits are in addition to your Employee Group Life Insurance benefit. The plan pays your full benefit amount to your beneficiary if you die as a result of an accident. A percentage of your benefit is paid to you if you suffer a dismemberment, or lose your sight, speech or hearing as a result of an accident.

Retirement Plan
Queen's provides a comprehensive retirement program for its employees. It is comprised of the following parts:

Pension Plan
The Queen's Health Systems Pension Plan is a defined benefit pension plan, designed to supplement Social Security benefits and recognize both earnings and years of service. The pension plan is funded entirely by Queen's—employees do not have to make any contributions. You are automatically eligible to become a member of the plan if you complete one year of service and work 1,000 hours.

Queen's 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
The Queen's Health Systems 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan is an excellent way to help save for your retirement years while deferring current taxes on the amount you save. You can save from 1% up to 100% of your eligible pay up to the IRS dollar limits each year. You are eligible for an employer match after one year of service provided you have worked 1,000 hours and are immediately 100% vested in employer matching contributions.

Tuition Reimbursement
The Queen's Medical Center supports and encourages the growth and development of employees through their enrollment in educational courses for credit in an institution of higher learning, continuing education programs (conferences, workshops, seminars) and specialty certification examinations. The educational activities approved for reimbursement must be of direct benefit to the Medical Center in reaching its mission. This policy applies to all employees and may be further defined by the Collective Bargaining Agreements.

Employee Assistance Program
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP)—offered through Employee Assistance of the Pacific helps employees and their families identify and resolve personal problems. The EAP provides up to six visits per year with a counselor for an assessment and, if necessary, assists with a referral for further care. The EAP can assist with:

  • Marital/relationship problems
  • Interpersonal problems (friends, co-workers)
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Problems with children and adolescents
  • Stress related problems
  • Substance abuse (alcohol and other drugs)
  • Crisis intervention
  • Other personal problems

Paid Time Off
